I Don't Want A Man Who Lives For Me

I can't help it. I have to post this poem I wrote... See, the thing is that I have noticed the growing obsession in young adults' literature with dependent relationships. You can't deny they ALL have them (Edward and Bella, Luce and Daniel, blah blah blah) have dependent relationships.

It seems romantic at first glance ,especially to someone like myself who is a hopeless romantic, all the talk about "I would die without you!" and "You ARE my life!" But as you think about it... you begin to realize just how unhealthy and

unbalanced it is. And that's not necessarily love. I mean, I'm not denying that they all didn't love each other deeply -- but it's a dependent love, the kind where you can't give your whole self because you are nothing without them. Basically, you treat the other like God. Ugh. That is NOT good. So, I got frustrated by all the crap that's being fed to young adults and teenagers, and decided to channel my fury in a healthy way (hehehehe). So I wrote this poem.

Enjoy :-)

I don't want a man who lives for me --
There has to be more than that.
He has to see something inside of me
and Something that I am inside of.

I want him to love me unconditionally --
but I don't want him to live for me.
If I were to go before it's his time too,
I want him to be strong and carry on
because I'm not the reason he loved life.

I don't want a man who lives for me --
There has to be something greater than 'us.'
I can't be the reason he's the man that he is;
the hand to hold onto when he feels that he's drowning.
I can't be the sun his happiness rises and sets with;
the cause of his joy and his strength.

I'll do the best that I can but I won't be enough;
I can't be the one that he lives for.
I want him to live for the One who caused me to live;
'cause He's the One that I'm living for.
We'll seek Him together and seek Him in each other,
and His strength will hold us together.

I don't want a man who lives for me --
I want a man who lives for Him, loves for us,
and lives so we can love for eternity.

Here are a few pictures I took, following my own advice in the blog post Keeping Things Fun, Fresh, and Fashionable.

  Lastly, here I am am wearing a Spring scarf. It's a very light, shimmery, silver mesh. Lots of fun to play with... as you can tell from picture # 2....

Born This Way: Why Lady Gaga Puts a Hamper on My Spiritual Life

     "Music."

Feed the word into Google and it will spit out millions of quotes, poetry, ideas, and articles inspired by this topic -- and justly so.
     There is something unique, something mysterious about music which can call forth formerly dormant emotions, inspire previously non-existent passions, and encourage one's feelings to rise to a crescendo as never before.

Which is exactly why it's a problem.

I have a bit of a confession to make. You've all heard of those darned Seven Deadly Sins, no? Well, I've got an issue with the rarely addressed Eight Deadly Sin: "Refusal To Delete 'Bad' Music From My iTunes Playlist."

I'm an emotional person to begin with. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and am easily affected by outside forces. (i.e. My day will be ruined if Mr. Good-Looking Senior Who Doesn't Know I Exist doesn't show up for class in the morning). Ergo, music, which has the uncanny ability to make bikers cry and politicians change their party, has very, very powerful affects on me.
I feel rather inclined to compare it to Your Average Joe drinking a bit too much alcohol -- I do and say things I wouldn't normally be disposed toward.

I came to this realization two weeks ago when I attended a stellar performance by a local opera singer. As the French lyrics rolled off his tongue, it felt as if my soul was soaring among the clouds. Rather Platonic? Maybe. But the overall feeling was positive; spiritual. I felt closer to God. The it hit me: other music does not make me feel the same way.

This is where Lady Gaga comes in.

I can't resist a catchy tune or dramatic lyrics. It's my downfall. Gaga's "Alejandro" is #2 on my Top Played list. This is not a nice song. And somehow, subconsciously, my brain-emotion connection thingy recognizes that. When I listen to a song which does not have a positive or innocent message, I will react accordingly. Unfortunately.

Granted, I've never run anyone over because I was listening to "Night Drive" by AAR. But I'd rather avoid the affects of such music. Here's the problem: I am completely and totally, 100% unable to delete these songs from my Playlist. I can't do it! I'd be letting go of all the tunes, the lyrics, the inspiration (some good things have come out of these songs!) that went hand-in-hand with these forbidden fruits.

Now let's forget Gaga. This is where God comes in.

I know I won't be able to delete these songs EVER -- At least not on my own. Heck, I can't get out of bed in the morning on my own. Maybe this Lenten season I'll learn to abandon myself to Him, throw my pride out the window, and say "I can't do it. Can you?" and see where that gets me.

Something tells me that by the end of these forty days, I'll be gaga for Gaga no more.

Run the Race -- With a Little Bit of Encouragement

I always find Lent to be a little scary and a little exciting. Scary because I am denying myself things which I usually use as motivation to get through the day. (i.e. dessert and such). However, it's really more on the exciting side, because I feel that I'm standing on a long path, ready to start a meaningful journey.
The way is uphill and it only gets steeper from here on out, and I don't know what dangers lie in my path -- but I know what lies at the end of the road, and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Here's a bit of inspiration to help you through your Lenten journey:

"Take up your cross," the Saviour said,
"If you would my disciple be;
Take up your cross with willing heart,
And humbly follow after me."

Take up your cross; let not its weight
Fill your weak soul with vain alarm;
His strength shall bear your spirit up,
And brace your heart and nerve your arm.

Take up your cross; nor heed the shame,
And let your foolish pride be still;
Your Lord refused not e'en to die
Upon a cross, on Calv'ry's hill.

Take up your cross, then, in his strength,
And calmly sin's wild deluge brave;
'Twill guide you to a better home,
It points to glory o'er the grave.

Take up your cross, and follow on,
Nor think till death to lay it down;
For only he who bears the cross
May hope to wear the glorious crown.

Keeping Things Fun, Fresh, and Fashionable

It feels about 20 degrees outside, it's pouring rain, and I still have those 10+ pounds from Christmas that I need to get rid of.

But hey -- winter worries can't pull the wool over my eyes! I know Spring is just around the corner, and I don't see why I should wait another minute to start planning for the most enchanting time of the year. Who's with me?

I'm gonna share some of my fanciful ideas and most inspiring discoveries to give you the little boost you need to get to the "out like a lamb" part.

1. Start transitioning your scarves. ladies! This is one of the most exciting of whimsical seasons for fashion, where the weather is as unpredictable as your ex. What's the one thing you can count on? A scarf! Start putting away those heavy knits and plushy, plump boa constrictors and toss on a flowy, gauzy little number. Not only can it be worn a million different ways, but it can help turn your monochromatic March wear into a glorious beacon of hope for others still stuck in a mental snowdrift.

2. Are you one of those people who runs in horror when they hear the word "orange?" I've only met one in my life who wasn't. Well, don't run. I promise it's better than it sounds. Bad news first: Orange is one of Spring's topmost trendy colors. GOOD NEWS: (don't run yet!) YOU CAN WEAR IT. Yes, you heard *ahem* read correctly. Cuz we ain't just talkin' the color of a Dunkin Donuts sign. Picture fairylike shades of coral, apricot, Caribbean sand, fresh peaches, and a moody Novermber sunset. Take your pick.
Do you have cool undertones and are unable to wear this cutting edge color near your face? No problem. Polish your nails in your favorite shade, (www.opi.com -- my favorite is "Y'all Come Back, Ya Hear?"), wear a few cheap bangles to add to the festivity, choose a winning skirt, or add a surprise pop of creamsicle in some fun sandals.
If you are lucky enough to be complemented by shades of orange and wish to implement it into your makeup routine, check out www.sephora.com for some killer colors.

3. Decorate with flowers -- anywhere! I'm talking the fake ones. Not the giant plastic leaves you find in the dimly lit clearance aisle, but the exuberant pastel petals which don't break the bank! You can find a pretty yet paltry selection at your local dollar store, or for a wider variety check out an art store such as Michael's or A.C. Moore.
I understand that these pretty little charlatans can't compare to the real deal, but it's amazing what they can do for your mood until the Azaleas start sprouting! I'm a college student with limited living space and decorating options, but I've received a zillion compliments on my own little work of art. (Sorry, no pictures. I'm home for spring break!)
To begin I hung a regular wall mirror in between two windows. This reflects the light making the room seem larger, and, of course, brighter. Then I twisted together fake vines (dollar store) and flirty pink blooms (wal-mart) and attached them to the rim of the mirror. This way the standard brown shade of the mirror rim is completely covered in frothy blooms. Then I wound remaining vines around the windows flanking the mirror, which brought the whole thing together. Voila! My whitewashed dorm room becomes a fairy wonderland.All for the grand total of $7.50.

Best of luck! Happy pre-spring celebrations!
